NSU Men’s Soccer Starts 2010 Season with Win over Christian Brothers

Aly Hassan scores golden goal in 106th minute

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Nova Southeastern University men’s soccer team won its first game of the season in double overtime on the road against the Christian Brothers Buccaneers, 2-1 on Friday night.

Aly Hassan (Sr., Weston, Fla.) scored both of the Sharks’ (1-0-0) goals, including a golden goal in the 106th minute. Hassan took a pass up the middle from freshman Simon Nett (Grimstad, Norway) and scored 15 feet in front of the goal with only the goalkeeper to beat. It is Hassan’s ninth career game-winning goal.

“It was a good team effort, everyone’s hard work paid off at the end,” said Hassan. “My goal was the result of everyone’s hard work.”

The Sharks put pressure on the Buccaneer (0-1-0) defense early with three shots in the first four minutes. Stian Roa (Fr., Oslo, Norway) took the first shot of the game with a rocket off the cross bar. Juan Gonzalez (Sr., Oakland Park, Fla.) received the rebound, but could not put the ball between the posts.

Hassan would take four more shots before halftime, none of which were on target. The ambient Shark defense swarmed the Buccaneers in the first half and did not allow a single shot on goal. NSU outshot the home team 7-to-1 in the opening period.

The Sharks came out strong in the second half and controlled the ball for the first 12 minutes. They scored the first goal of the game off a corner kick from Roa in the 62nd minute. Chris Pruitt (Sr., Detroit, Mich.) earned an assist after finding Hassan in the box for the quick score. The lead evaporated four minutes later when CBU’s Yannick Skull scored the tying goal off a deflection.

However, the Sharks controlled the pace of the game over the final 25 minutes of regulation, but could not score. The Sharks were forced to play defense for the majority of the first overtime period due to Buccaneer pressure and quick fouls. NSU only had one shot the entire period, while NSU goalkeeper Lyle Howe (So., Coral Springs, Fla.) faced three corner kicks and one shot on goal.

NSU entered the final overtime period with more poise than before and controlled the ball until Hassan scored his second goal of the game. The victory marks the third time the Sharks have won their first game over the last four years. They are now 2-0 all-time against CBU.

The Sharks will complete their road trip this Sunday, Sept. 5 when they take on Lambuth at Eccles Field at 11 am.
